Monument to partisans who died beside the wood Girelė

This memorial stone and the Cross were unveiled and consecrated on the 21st August 1999. Seven partisans’ names and pseudonyms are engraved on the stone. They are Jonas Bajoriūnas-Vakaras, Motiejus Beleckas-Peleckis, Adolfas Biliūnas-Cvirka, Jonas Momeniškis-Lionginas, Bronislovas Pakalnis-Aukštikalnis, Jurgis Petrauskas-Dobras and Juozapas Žandaris- Mūsiškis. They were killed in 1946, in Oniūnai village (Pakruojis district) in a battle with NKVD troops. The killed partisans’ bodies were brought to Joniškėlis square and after a week, they were buried at the edge of the Girelė wood. In 1988, the Joniškėlis parish priest Benediktas Urbonas built a temporary pine Cross. An author of a new Cross is a folk artist Vytautas Bakūnas.
